We got Guillen...

Yes, Juan Rivera will be playing right field in RFK this year, when the Angels come to town for interleague play, as we have traded for Jose Guillen, who has one year and $3.5M left on his contract, with a club option for $4M in 2006. We also shipped out shortstop Maicer Izturis. Here is the MLB article on the trade.

I like Rivera, but all in all I think this is a good trade, getting us as close as we're likely to get to a new legitimate all star on the roster.

I'm about to get on yet another plane, but I'll do some analysis tomorrow morning.

Dear Mr. Bowden (from a concerned fan),

pitcher, def.

4: the position on a baseball team of the player who throws the ball for a batter to try to hit; "he has played every position except pitcher"; "they have a southpaw on the mound"

i like the move as he's the best hitter in d.c. now and we got him at a relatively low cost. hopefully he'll keep it together mentally.

thanks,

I'm really happy that baseball is back in DC, but that doesn't mean we don't have the right to complain. This is ridiculous.

Izturis hit .338 in AAA this year with a .428 OBP. Instead of signing a subpar offensive shortstop like Guzman for 4 million dollars a year, you put Izturis at short and the chances are he would have produced more than Guzman for 300k.

Guillen has been fairly productive the last few years, but guess what?

Rivera hit .307/.364/.465

Guillen hit .294/.352/.497

So, he downgraded at shortstop, and got a comparable player in Guillen who happens to be a headcase. All for an extra 6-7 million a year.

Yikes.

Actually, Jose Guillen will be playing right field in Anaheim, as the Nationals play the Angels out there in mid-June (the interleague schedule, aside from the Toronto home-and-home, has the Athletics and Mariners playing at RFK, while D.C. visits Anaheim and Texas). Expect Mr. Guillen to get a wonderful reception from the fans at Angel Stadium. (Yeah, right.)
